Respect and Collaboration
Berkeley Lab has a tradition of multidisciplinary teams working together to bring science solutions to the world. Fostering a diverse workforce—in experience, perspective, and background—and a culture of inclusion are key to attracting and engaging the brightest minds and furthering our record of scientific excellence and groundbreaking innovations.
Our guiding principles are:
- Listen to others and encourage collaboration. We are stronger as a group when our uniqueness is valued.
- Reach out if you see someone confused or in need. We are concerned about others.
- Treat others with respect. We believe in fairness for all.
Berkeley Lab’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives help to further develop the Lab’s culture of inclusion. The Lab was the first in the DOE national Lab system to publish our workplace demographics. We were the first in the University of California system to establish gender transition guidelines. We encourage all employees to take implicit bias training, especially if they have been asked to serve on a hiring committee. And we have a number of family friendly policies in place. We have made some progress, but there is still much to be done.
Learn more about how to get involved in our DEI initiatives by visiting the DEI website. This site offers a range of resources, from information about dual careers to lactation rooms to LGBTQ issues.
The Lab’s Employee Resource Groups (ERG) are open to all Lab employees and promote opportunities for professional growth and development, provide an opportunity for informal networking, and support the Lab’s vision and values. Raising awareness about ERG opportunities can help to foster a more inclusive culture.
Following the University of California’s Policy on sexual harassment and violence in the workplace, all Lab supervisors are required to take sexual harassment prevention training every two years. The Lab also has a Title VII/IX Officer to respond to concerns and potential claims. The Lab’s complete Policy on Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment is here.
